Rollers differ by series: Winguard uses a 1-1/4 inch tandem roller with a stainless steel housing rated for 150 lb per panel; ClassicVue takes a 1-1/2 inch single roller with a nylon wheel; Preferred uses a proprietary PGT roller assembly that bolts through the sill track and cannot be swapped for generic hardware. We carry OEM PGT rollers and tracks, plus select aftermarket equivalents where the spec matches exactly. For Winguard units, we use only OEM rollers, the aftermarket tandem rollers we’ve tested in Opa-locka’s salt air fail within 18 months. Signs Your PGT Sliding or Patio Door Is Failing

• The door sticks or requires shoulder pressure to move. This is usually roller failure, the bearings seize from salt corrosion or the wheel develops flat spots from running on a damaged track. In Opa-locka, we see this accelerate within three blocks of the water, the salt air penetrates the roller housing even on stainless units.
• Visible rust on the track or roller axle. Surface rust on a steel track is cosmetic; orange flaking that leaves pits in the rolling surface is structural. Once the track is pitted, new rollers will fail in six to twelve months because they cannot roll smoothly. We document this with photos and show the customer before quoting replacement.
• Lock won’t engage or the handle spins freely. The multipoint lock mechanism in PGT Winguard and Preferred series has a central gearbox and two to four locking points along the frame edge. The gearbox fails when the door is forced while locked, or when salt corrosion swells the internal springs. A spinning handle usually means the spindle has sheared, a $45 part, but if the gearbox is cracked, the full assembly runs $180-$340.
• Daylight visible around the frame or weatherstripping gaps. Compression weatherstripping on PGT sliders is replaceable without removing the panel, but the pile height matters: Winguard uses .270 inch pile, ClassicVue uses .320 inch. Wrong pile and the door won’t seal or won’t slide. We stock both in gray and white to match existing frames.
• Condensation between glass panes. This indicates seal failure in an insulated glass unit, not a frame or hardware problem. For PGT doors, the IGU is field-replaceable if the frame is intact, but the glass must be ordered to the exact cut size and thickness, laminated for Winguard, tempered for ClassicVue. We measure the visible glass, the overall unit size, and the spacer bar color to match.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one safe DIY check: open the door, look down at the roller adjustment screw at the bottom corner of the panel, and see if a few clockwise turns with a Phillips head raises the panel enough to clear a minor track obstruction. If that does not solve it, stop. PGT sliding panels weigh 80 to 140 pounds depending on size and glass type, and removing one requires lifting the panel clear of the track while it is angled inward, a two-person operation with real risk of back injury or glass breakage. The multipoint lock mechanism contains spring-loaded components under tension; disassembly without the correct release sequence can launch internal parts.
